Big and Little Footprints

As the year comes to a close, I’ve spent time in Florida with my family reflecting on 2024 and excited about where EPEL is headed in 2025. Walking along the beach each day, I’ve noticed footprints in the sand. The larger footprints—those of adults—are making a path that mostly goes forward and back, potentially following or leading.

But scattered among them, are smaller footprints—the steps of young children. These tiny footprints are a little more unorganized and unpredictable, veering off to run and play.

These little footprints remind me of why we do what we do. Little feet grow into big ones, and with growth comes responsibility: the responsibility to lead, to follow, and to shape the future. As a community, we play a vital role in equipping and supporting those BIG and little feet with the skills, opportunities, and encouragement they need to navigate school and life successfully.

In the Greater Elgin Area, we serve a community with approximately 18,500 children under the age of five. Supporting every child takes all “hands and feet” on deck—it requires the dedication of families, schools, organizations, and neighbors. It also takes investment: of time, resources, and generosity.

As we prepare for 2025, I hope you will consider joining us in this transformative journey. Your contribution—whether it’s a small monthly donation in 2025 or a larger commitment—helps us ensure that every BIG and little step we take creates equitable opportunities for children and families to thrive.

Together, we can build a community where every child is supported, every family is empowered, and the Greater Elgin Area becomes the #1 place to raise a child.

Happy New Year!
